The Biggest Guy – A Poem By Dave Mann

Please enjoy the following poem written by renowned Michigan poet Dave Mann in commemoration of the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

The Biggest Guy

After 9-11-01

We never thought
September
could get so hot

Heat pounding down
from the sky
shimmering up
from the streets

In New York City
we should have known
to expect
the unexpected

We were told
but never believed
this day would come

Noise
elevated
screaming
horns bellowing
vehicles
accelerating to innocents
dead or dying

Construction
going up
deconstruction
crashing down

The air thick
dirt
exhaust fumes
pieces of skin and glass

When you’re out
to make a statement
you always look for
the biggest guy
in the bar
